Marching Band and the Expanding Universe by Markus Almond* follows the life of Joey Kimbel, a shy, red-headed kid who’s just starting high school. During the summer before his freshman year when he starts school in marching band he is awestruck by the color guard, Alhena Almasi, who breezes through the door. The story follows Joey through the ups and downs of his high school career, his relationship with Alhena, the trouble he has with bullies in school, the punk rock music scene and much more. I also enjoyed the fact that it took place in Chicago. :)
If you were ever in marching band or part of the drill team, like I was, you will probably be able to relate to some of the story. I truly enjoyed this book and can’t wait for the sequel.
