One of the questions I was asked on the Mrs. Illinois America pageant questionnaire was: “Who is one person you’d like to meet?” and I didn’t really have an answer because prior to the competition I had recently met the one person I wanted to: Mark Sisson.
When Jeff & I “went Paleo”, technically speaking we actually went Primal. Jeff came across Mark Sisson’s site, Mark’s Daily Apple, back in late 2008 and then picked up his excellent book, The Primal Blueprint as soon as it was released. Over the next couple years, despite the repeated “you’re doing what?!” and “you’re still wearing those ugly toe shoes?” from our friends and family, we made the transition from the Standard American Diet (SAD) to the Primal lifestyle. Between the time we’ve gone Primal and now I’ve lost a total of 60 pounds but what’s even better than that is the knowledge and understanding I’ve gained on how my body reacts to different foods.
I don’t like “Before and After” so Before and Current :)
For years we held strong to the fact that we were Primal, not Paleo, but we’ve long since given in to the fact that Paleo is the term of choice. We owe so much to Mark Sisson and are so thankful for the work that he’s done that I can’t tell you how excited I was to actually meet him a couple years ago.
As it is with any sort of widespread change, it’s been a long time coming, but nevertheless it really amazes me how widespread the Paleo movement has become over the last couple years. Our weird shoes and our caveman diet are not as strange anymore. Whodathunkit? ;)
PrimalPalooza Starts Today
If you’re new to Paleo this is a great time to jump in and give it a whirl! Starting today and continuing for the next 21 days Mark’s Daily Apple will be hosting a PrimalPalooza – he calls it the 21 Day Challenge, but I’m taking it upon myself to give it a snazzy new title ;) – of giveaways and challenges and providing inspiration to help you along the way. Whether you’re brand new to the Paleo/Primal lifestyle or you’ve been immersed in it for some time, Mark will have a little somethin’ somethin’ for everyone during the next 21 days.
If you don’t know the difference between Paleo and Primal no worries, they’re quite similar. Actually it could be argued that Paleo (since the original book in 2001) has adopted most of Mark’s stances on things such as saturated fat, but that’s neither here nor there. If you want to dig in to the nitty gritty, the difference really comes down to dairy. If high quality, properly sourced dairy is included in a recipe then it’s Primal and technically not 100% Paleo. It’s as easy as that.
If you need a little refresher or are interested in Mark’s particular views on the Paleo lifestyle, check out the fantastic infographic his team put together.

My 21 Day Challenge and the Paleo Cookbook Contest

All of the new recipes here on Paleo Porn during the next 21 days are guaranteed keep you right on track! And although they technically fit I’ve found sweets to hinder my focus, so paleo desserts are one thing that may be missing from the site during the next 21 days. You’ve been warned ;)
