Greetings from Miami! :) I’m not a big drinker, and I’m not a fan of beer, but have you tried Samuel Adams?

I’ve got another story today about strength and beer. Plus! this Paleo Turnip Hash Casserole recipe makes for a great dish to serve for breakfast, and it doesn’t include eggs, as many breakfast recipes do.

The last time we were in Miami was back in September to celebrate Jeff & our friend Mike’s 30th birthday. We left after a few short days which just happened to be the same day Pigskin Paleo was released.

While we were here we randomly stopped for lunch at Scotty’s Landing. Little did we know that, while stopping at this little restaurant/bar, Jeff & I would be participating in a competition. We had just sat down at our table and started looking at the menu when a guy came around and asked if we wanted to participate in the stein hoisting competition that would be starting momentarily. We had no idea what he was talking about, but the more information he gave us, the more interested we got. Three out of five of us decided to participate and the guy said once he gathered enough participants, he’d be back to get the guys first and then me. Oh, did I mention the overall winner would be provided an all-expense paid trip to Oktoberfest? Sounded like a fun little experience to participate in for free.

We ordered our food and then the event host came back around to gather the guys from our table.Jeff Sarris Stein Hoisting Miami They gathered around a circular table and the host explained the rules.

  • If the full cup of water dripped over the edge, you were out.
  • If your arm dropped from straight in line with your shoulder, you were out.
  • If you were bending backwards to hold your arm up, you were out.
  • The event would be timed, and even if you were the last man standing you should keep your arm up as long as you could because you weren’t just competing against the guys standing there, you were competing against people in bars all over the United States.

Jeff made it into the final two and after 4:45 he had to tap out, or rather he shook out.

Marla Sarris Stein Hoisting MiamiNext up were the girls. I went in with the intention of winning, but I really had no idea how I would do. Surprisingly a couple of the girls dropped their arms pretty early, like within the first 1-2 minutes. It was down to just two of us and the last girl dropped her cup. I was the winner BUT I knew to hold out as long as I could! After 3:48 my brain was saying go but my arms were saying NO MORE! I not only won against all the girls there, but I had beat the current women’s national record! Woohoo!!

The guy in charge told us to check the website to see my name posted as the current record holder and to check if anyone beat my score. Luckily I grabbed a shot of my name on the leaderboard before some chick knocked me off with almost an 11 minute hold…nuts right?!Marla Sarris leader board Stein Hoisting Miami

It was a lot of fun and afterwards we were given free drinks to celebrate for participating. Surprisingly I didn’t make the sour face I typically do when trying a drink I don’t like, but that little cup was enough for me. :)

Back to Breakfast

I won’t be cooking much while we’re here in Miami since our little Airbnb rental only has a cooktop stove, but if you’ve got an oven and a little time, shred up some turnips and you can have a hash casserole ready to eat throughout the week.

Paleo Turnip Hash Casserole

Paleo Turnip Hash Casserole

Yield: 3-4 Servings

Ingredients

  • 8 strips bacon, chopped
  • bacon fat
  • 1lb turnip, shredded
  • 1 teaspoon coarse ground sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper, plus more for the top
  • 1 can coconut milk
  • 1-2 leeks, sliced (depending on the size of your leek)
  • pinch of nutmeg
  • 4 fresh scallions or chives, sliced
  • 6-8 baby bellas, minced

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F
  2. Cook bacon in a cast iron skillet over medium heat for 1-3 minutes per side. Set aside and reserve bacon fat. (You don't want the bacon to to be fully cooked because it will finish in the oven.)
  3. Clean and peel turnips and shred, I used my food processor.
  4. Transfer shredded turnips to a large mixing bowl.
  5. Add 6 slices of chopped bacon, bacon fat, sea salt, black pepper, coconut milk, leeks and nutmeg to the bowl and mix with the shredded turnips to combine.
  6. Transfer turnip mixture to a 2.2 quart oblong glass baking dish.
  7. Scatter minced baby bellas, 2 leftover pieces of chopped bacon and sliced scallions across the top of the turnip mixture. (If you don't have fresh scallions, fresh or dried chives work well too.)
  8. Sprinkle black pepper across the top and throw the dish in the oven.
  9. Bake for 45-60 minutes or until topping is crispy.
  10. Enjoy! :)
