Doughnuts are pastries made from flour, fat, and sugar. Only one of those ingredients is Paleo-friendly, and it is largely undermined by the other two ingredients.
Paleo and Flour
Flour is not only full of gluten, it’s extremely high in carbohydrates and causes a massive spike in blood sugar and a corresponding spike in insulin. This sets off a vicious cycle in which blood sugar and insulin rise and fall, leading to insulin resistance, which is connected to a host of chronic health problems, including diabetes and heart disease.
Paleo and Sugar
That’s just the flour. Sugar creates the same reaction in the body, and that reaction is amplified when sugar and refined flour are used together. Sugar has been shown to increase inflammation and cortisol, and decrease leptin, leaving us feeling stressed and hungry (another dangerous combination).
The Fuming Fuji
If you think giving doughnuts to your kids as an occasional treat is still OK, the Fuming Fuji would like you to think again.
On the other hand, you can always make yourself a batch of Paleo Doughnuts.
