Sugar + Sugar = Disaster
Although we love getting in a healthy helping of fat, we can’t condone doing so alongside flour and sugar. Both flour and sugar have a tendency to raise blood sugar and insulin levels, resulting in inflammation, increased cortisol, and decreased leptin (which leaves you feeling hungry).
They’re also devoid of nutrients. Sure, even flour has some minerals, but refined flour (the type most often used in pastries) is less nutritious and higher in carbs than whole grains (not that whole grains are healthy either). Sugar has no nutrients to speak of, so when you eat a pastry, you’re getting all the negative health effects of eating a heap of sugar without gaining anything.
In order to sell their wares, some manufacturers of pastries market their products as healthy, even when they’re loaded with sugar. Don’t fall for them. Just about anything that comes prepackaged is not going to be good for you.
