Pop Tarts are just a clever name for toaster pastries. Pastries aren’t Paleo and neither is anything that goes in a toaster, so it’s safe to say Pop Tarts can’t be included.
The pastry part of this toaster treat is bad enough. It’s full of refined flour, sugar, and fat – and not any of the healthy fats we condone. They’re more likely to be loaded with vegetable shortening to make them flaky and shelf stable.
Sugar + Sugar = Disaster
Then the pastries are filled with even more sugar. Many of us have been raised to believe anything related to fruit is healthy. It’s true that whole fruit certainly has it’s place as part of a Paleo lifestyle, but Pop Tarts don’t use whole fruit. They generally use some sort of jam or jelly that contains a ton of added sugar. When added to the flour and sugar already present in the pastry surrounding it, this breakfast treat is sure to leave you feeling tired and cranky for the rest of the day.
Mark Sisson suggests Pop Tarts should come with a Surgeon General’s Warning.
