Apple pie spice is a blend of spices commonly used in apple pie. Cinnamon and nutmeg are the most common spices for apple pie spice, and they are definitely Paleo. We like to use the apple pie spice from Penzey’s which has two different kinds of cinnamon, nutmeg, mace and cloves.
The Health Benefits
Implementing spices in your diet is not only Paleo-friendly, it’s one of the best things you can do for your health. Spices come loaded with antioxidants that help keep inflammation low and protect our fats from oxidation (which makes them great for marinating fatty meats). Mark Sisson even labeled cinnamon a smart spice.
As the name suggests, apple pie spice can make a great addition to your Paleo apple pie, but there’s no reason you should feel limited in your use of any particular spice. You can use it in Paleo muffins, pancakes, or any time you want the great combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, and cloves.
