Caffeine is a contentious topic in the Paleo community. It’s true our cavemen ancestors weren’t brewing coffee or tea, but they certainly had access to the raw cocoa beans and coffee beans (at least in some parts of the world). Coffee and tea qualify as whole foods, so there’s no reason to exclude them as part of a healthy lifestyle.
The only reason to exclude caffeine is if you’re sensitive to it. Some people experience jitters, lack of sleep, or heart palpitations when they consume caffeine, and those people should probably avoid it.
The Health Benefits
For those who don’t experience any adverse effects though, sources of caffeine usually come loaded with beneficial antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, which can often counteract the negative effects of the caffeine. For most people, one cup (or even two cups) of coffee a day won’t hurt, and can even be beneficial. Just stay away from soda and energy drinks.
