Candy is generally defined as a snack or dessert that contains large amounts of sugar, which means it can’t be included as part of a healthy lifestyle.
The Dangers of Sugar
Sugar is a source of high calories with little to no nutritional value. It creates a spike in blood sugar and a corresponding spike in insulin to deal with all that sugar. Insulin is a nifty hormone that we need to digest our food, but in high doses it promotes the storage of nutrients as fat and prevents the breakdown of fat cells for nutrients.
The one exception to the no-candy rule is high-quality dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is defined by containing more cocoa than sugar and cocoa has a number of health benefits. The higher the cocoa percentage, the better. As long as you get the minimally processed dark chocolate, it’s the one candy that can be included (in moderation) as part of a healthy Paleo lifestyle.
Just be sure to stay away from the candy that’s almost all sugar.
