The Fat Profile
Halibut is a type of fish and there are lots of reasons to eat fish. For starters, it comes loaded with healthy omega-3 fats, a type of polyunsaturated fat (PUFA) with anti-inflammatory properties. The Standard American Diet (SAD) is currently much too high in omega-6 fats (a type of PUFA with inflammatory properties) and low in omega-3 fats. Ideally we should all be consuming at least as many omega-3 as omega-6 fats, if not more. If you’re not getting enough omega-3 fats, adding some fish to your diet can be a great way to get that healthy fat in.
A Nutrient-Dense Food
Fish also comes loaded with micronutrients, including an array of B vitamins, iron, iodine, selenium, and magnesium. All of these are essential for maintaining a healthy mind and body and iodine in particular is found almost exclusively in seafood.
Farmed vs. Wild-Caught
One concern people have lately had with seafood is what is and what is not safe to eat. With high demand depleting the natural stores of fish, farmed fish has become increasingly common. The result tends to be fish that have been raised in their own filth and pumped with antibiotics. Mark Sisson recommends Pacific halibut for those who are concerned about eating only the safest fish.
