Paleo and Sugar
One of the first steps to living a Paleo lifestyle is to eliminate (or at least limit) your sugar consumption. Sugar sets us off on a blood sugar roller coaster in which the highs caused by sugar lead to crashes later, leaving us craving more sugar. Sugar also results in a rush of insulin, which promotes the storage of nutrients as fat, and prevents the breakdown of fat for energy.
Sugar + Sugar = Hot Cocoa
Getting off the sugar pretty hard to do with hot cocoa. First, it’s made primarily with milk, which is already in an uncertain position on the Paleo menu. If you can tolerate dairy, there’s probably a place for whole raw milk in your Paleo diet, but milk is pretty high in sugar all by itself. Add more sugar with the hot cocoa mixes that stores sell and you’ve got dessert in a cup – and I don’t mean a Paleo-friendly dessert.
Chocolate Without the Sugar
Chocolate can certainly be included as part of a healthy lifestyle, but the darker the better. Try to wean yourself off sugar by consuming darker and darker chocolate until you’re eating just the cocoa by itself. If you can manage that, this Paleo Hot Cocoa recipe is for you.
