Ketchup seems pretty harmless. It’s just tomatoes, salt, and vinegar, right? Yes, but it’s also loaded with sugar, and sugar is not our friend. Too much sugar can spike our blood sugar, which we want to avoid because a spike leads to a crash, leaving us feeling tired, cranky, and craving more sugar.
The Problem With Sugar
Our bodies have to pump out enough insulin to digest all that sugar. Insulin promotes the storage of nutrients as fat and prevents the breakdown of fat for energy. Chronically high levels of insulin also result in insulin resistance: when the cells stop accepting insulin. The body responds by producing more insulin and the cycle continues. Insulin resistance is a metabolic disorder that precedes everything from diabetes to heart disease.
Ketchup Is Not A Vegetable
Mark Sisson listed ketchup as one “vegetable” to avoid.
