Plant vs. Candy
Marshmallow (the plant, not the candy) is a plant that has been consumed for millennia. Since plants have a number of nutrients and and antioxidants to offer, there’s no reason we can’t include marshmallow as part of a healthy diet.
The marshmallows most of us normally think of when we think “marshmallow” got their name from the marshmallow plant, which used to be an ingredient in the candy to help it hold its shape. Candy makers no longer use the marshmallow plant in their confectionary, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make it a part of our diets.
The flowers, leaves, and roots have been consumed for medicinal purposes all over the world. Tea made out of marshmallow root is still considered by some people to be an effective cure for a sore throat and certain digestive issues. For example, if you suffer from diverticulitis attacks, supplementing with marshmallow root may be one way to reduce the inflammation associated with those attacks (source).
