Matcha is a form of green tea. Whenever you see green tea ice cream or green tea smoothies advertised, those have been flavored with matcha, because it’s the only green tea strong enough to hold its own against all the milk and sugar (ice cream and sugar-laden smoothies are not healthy just because they have green tea).
What It is
Matcha is shade-grown green tea that has been powdered. This increases the surface area when you brew it, which is what creates the strong flavor. Just like other forms of green tea, matcha comes loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It’s an even better source than other forms of tea because the leaves don’t get strained out: you consume them when you drink the brewed matcha.
Mark Sisson has more than a few reasons matcha can be included as part of a healthy lifestyle.
