Octopus is technically meat, and most of us living a Paleo lifestyle know there are plenty of reasons to eat meat. Not only is it one of the best sources of protein, it also comes chock full of micronutrients, such as iron, selenium, calcium, and various B vitamins.
The Importance of B12
Of all the B vitamins, B12 is the only vitamin we have to get from animal sources. It’s available in beef, liver, eggs, octopus, clams, mussels, fish, and other animal sources, but never in plants. You may have heard you can get vitamin B12 from seaweed or fermented soy, but that’s not true. Instead of vitamin B12, those foods have cobamides, which are B12 analogues that block the intake of true B12 and actually exacerbate vitamin B12 deficiency (source).
