Seafood is not only Paleo, it’s rich in fat and protein, as well as vitamins and minerals.
Most of us know omega-3 fats are necessary for building and maintaining a healthy brain. When humans were still starting out as a species, it was the coastal tribes that tended to fare the best. This was because they were consuming plenty of omega-3 fats from all the seafood they were eating.
Omega-6 vs. Omega-3
One of the biggest problems with today’s Standard American Diet (SAD) is it is extremely high in omega-6 fats (another type of polyunsaturated fat with inflammatory properties) and relatively low in omega-3 fats. Ideally, we should be consuming at least as much omega-3 as omega-6 (if not more) to counteract the inflammatory effects of the omega-6 fats. Eating plenty of seafood is one of the best ways to do this.
Wild vs. Farmed Seafood
Unfortunately, much of the seafood available to us today is nothing like the seafood our early ancestors were eating. As our population has increased, so has demand for all things seafood and the result has been fish farms, where fish are packed into pens together and fed protein pellets that don’t resemble their natural diets. Throw in some antibiotics and pesticides for good measure, and some farmed fish can be downright scary.
What to Buy
There are still some wild-caught varieties available though, and some farmed fish is worse than others. Mark Sisson has some tips on how to make sure you’re getting the best fish possible the next time you go to your local grocery store.
