Simple syrup is a common ingredient in cocktails. Alcohol can taste harsh and bitter, so what better way to help it go down than sugar?
Paleo and Alcohol
Simple syrup is just sugar and water, and since sugar is not Paleo, neither is simple syrup. Cocktails occupy a pretty uncertain position on the Paleo menu as it is. On the one hand, alcohol can be pretty toxic. On the other hand, plenty of studies have shown that alcohol, when consumed in moderation, can actually be beneficial to health.
As always, it’s a matter of what works best for you as an individual. If you know you can tolerate a little bit of alcohol now and then, go for it. If you love indulging in the occasional cocktail, you’re better off making your own. Using natural sweeteners like fruit and honey will still cause a spike in blood sugar, but they won’t cause the plenty of other detrimental health effects that have been linked to sugar.
