Sour cream is cream that has been fermented with certain kinds of lactic acid bacteria. Now wait a minute, cavemen didn’t have cream, much less fermented cream, so how can sour cream be Paleo?
A Whole Foods Diet
Although hunter-gatherers didn’t have access to dairy, there’s no reason we can’t include it as an occasional part of our diets. Obviously, those who are allergic to dairy should avoid it, but as long as you don’t experience any issues with it, dairy can be considered a nutritious whole food.
Get The Best You Can
As with all dairy, raw, organic, full-fat dairy from pastured cows is the best. I know that sounds demanding, and it’s not always possible to find something that fits all those qualifications, but do the best you can. Dairy that meets all those requirements will have the most nutrients and beneficial enzymes.
The Benefits of Fermentation
Fermented dairy (like sour cream) is even better because it acts as a probiotic. It introduces beneficial bacteria into our guts, which helps us in all sorts of ways, including boosting our immune health and even our cognition. Before agriculture, we came into contact with billions of bacteria from all the time we spent outside, digging in the dirt, and eating fruits and vegetables right off the ground/tree/vine. There was no such thing as sterilization, and although sterilization has done many useful things for us, it has its drawbacks, especially when taken to an extreme.
