Let’s be clear: CoolWhip is not Paleo. Anything that comes out of a can (especially a spray can) is almost never going to be Paleo-friendly. The store-bought whipped creams tend to come loaded with added ingredients like powdered sugar and cornstarch, so definitely avoid those.
Homemade Is Always Better
If you can tolerate dairy though, there’s no reason not to make your own whipped cream as an occasional indulgence. Using it to top off some berries is one of the best Paleo desserts out there. Making your own whipped cream is easy if you have a mixer. Just throw it in a chilled bowl (the colder everything is, the better) and let your mixer do all the work until you have fluffy white peaks. If you’re feeling up to the challenge, you can even whip it by hand, but be warned that will take a while and definitely constitutes a workout.
Paleo and Sugar
A truly Paleo dessert doesn’t have any sugar added to it, but if you really want to throw a little coconut sugar in your whipped cream, it’s not the worst thing you can do, especially if you’re active and in need of the extra calories.
If you can’t tolerate dairy (or just want to avoid it) Mark Sisson has a recipe for whipped coconut cream.
