Yerba mate is a type of herbal tea made by steeping the dried leaves and twigs of the mate plant in hot water (not boiling – you want it closer to 185 degrees Farenheit).
The Health Benefits
There’s nothing wrong with drinking herbal tea. On the contrary, it has proven health benefits. Like most teas, yerba mate comes loaded with vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C and various B vitamins. It’s also an excellent source of antioxidants, which are handy for keeping inflammation low and boosting everything from immune health to cognitive function.
Caffeine vs. Theobromine
Yerba mate has become popular in recent years for its supposed ability to produce a caffeine-like energy boost without the negative effects (jitters) of caffeine. Turns out (unlike most herbal teas) yerba mate is not caffeine-free, but it includes a hefty dose of theobromine along with the caffeine and that may be the reason for the lack of jitters.
