Episode Transcript
Hey, everybody, Marla Sarris from Paleo Porn here. Where the heck have I been? Stay tuned to find out about our new book and about the new recipes on the site and a whole bunch more that’s been going on since the last “This Week in Paleo Porn”. Let’s get to everything.
So, the first thing I wanna tell you about is our travels. Since the last time we filmed, I was filming on our Jet Blue flight to Boston. We got to Boston, we picked up our rental car, and we drove to Jackman, Maine, and we stayed for a week in a little tiny cabin in the woods. It was a really tiny town, and it was really close to the Canadian border, so we took a ride on some ATVs for the first time, which was really fun and we made a short little tiny video of that. And Jeff and I took a ride across the border and we went to St. George’s in Quebec, Canada to check out Canada for the first time, and we ate at a nice little tiny place where everybody spoke French, so that was fun.
And then, while we were in our little cabin, I read a whole bunch of books, so the fiction page on Paleo Porn I have been updating, and I’ve read nine total books since the last time I talked to you, but six of them while we were in that little cabin.
So, a lot of really fun things, all different types of topics. That is on paleoporn.net/fiction, and one in particular Jeff gave to me after we were in Maine. We flew, of course, to Montana, ’cause that’s the typical place to go, across the country. We went to Montana, for our interview for the minimalism film documentary, so you can check that out at minimalismfilm.com. Yes (laughs).
It’ll be out late 2015, so check that out. And while we were in Missoula, Montana, which is also where my sister lives, I got to hang out with her, and we got to celebrate our birthdays together, since we have the same birthday on August 20th. So we went to get our ears pierced. I got a third hole, so that was fun, and Jeff got me a new book.
So, Marching Band and the Expanding Universe by Markus Almond. So great of a book. If you have ever been in marching band, well it’s also got some Chicago themes. He was like a punk rock drummer, so it was really cool. It was just a really great book. So I put that up on the page.
Let’s talk about some food! There’s so many things, I had to write it down this time (sorry if I have to look down). So I’ve got five new recipes on Paleo Porn since the last time I talked to you. So the first one is Dry Rub Beef Brisket. So I tried to make a recipe after we were in Austin a couple times earlier this year, that’s kind of like Austin brisket, but totally not because I don’t have a smoker and I only used my kitchen, so it is baked brisket, but it’s definitely delicious. I really enjoyed making that at home.
The next thing I’ve got for you is Paleo Tortillas. So excited to share this recipe finally on the site. I’ve been tinkering with it a bit here and there, and we made them, and then went and got Chipotle and stuffed the tortillas with Chipotle, but there are so many different ways that you can use the tortilla recipe. You can make tiny taco shells, or you can make large ones for burritos, or just make them and eat them as they are.
There’s also Spinach Salad with Pork Belly and I love pork belly, and you might have seen my hashtag, of course, #porkyporkpork, which I put on everything that I – we – I seem to cook pork a lot, which I didn’t realize until I started using that hashtag, but yeah, so that salad is posted, and if you’re not a fan of spinach, I guarantee you’ll like it with the pork belly on top.
The fourth recipe I have, and fifth recipe I have that’s new on site are kind of together. So I had previously posted Hamburger in a Bowl, which I made when we were in Colorado, and it uses a small amount of ingredients, so we could just – I made it while we were in a cabin in southern Colorado. But now, when we came home, I made Lamburger in a Bowl with Tzatziki Sauce (I hope I said that right). But, usually Tzatziki sauce uses cucumbers, but I used zucchini, ’cause that’s what I had on hand and it is dairy-free. Typically it’s made using sour cream or some kind of dairy product, and so I made this Paleo version without, so it’s a little bit less thick, without the dairy product in there. But Lamburger in a Bowl, I made as a quick meal because we were hungry, and I just threw it all together, so that is a quick meal you can make for dinner, and you can double or triple it and you can bring leftovers for lunch.
So those are the new recipes on the site, and yeah. Since we’ve been home from our travels from Missoula and Maine and Canada, we went to check out the stand-up paddle board competition that was taking place in Chicago, and I did my first 700-meter sprint race, and it was awesome, and I beat the women’s record that currently being held by thirty seconds, so I’m so looking forward to more stand-up paddle boarding, although the summer is kind of leaving. But we picked up new boards, so now I can go paddle whenever I want as long as it’s warm. Oh! Our own board, not a new board.
OK, so the last thing I wanna talk about is Pigskin Paleo! So, the NFL season is starting, and so Pigskin Paleo is celebrating the second birthday of my cookbook being out, and so we decided that we wanted to give it a little bit of an upgrade. So we’ve got a second edition that we’ve been working on, and all the recipes are done. They’ve been created and cooked and photographed and I finished editing, and right now we’re in the last phase of the layout and design for Pigskin, so I’m so looking forward to launching the new book, Pigskin Paleo 2.0, we can call it. But yeah, that is a whole bunch of what’s been going on on our side and we’re actually leaving and heading towards L.A. this weekend, so if you’re in California in the Los Angeles area, and would like to hang out and get a coffee, let us know, and we’ll see you next week.
