Marla Sarris: Hey, everybody! Marla Sarris from Paleo Porn here, and this week we’re coming to you from our home gym because I wanna talk to you a little bit about fitness. Let’s get to it!
When we were in LA last week, on our very last day before we left, I did a surfing lesson, and I’ve always wanted to go surf and learn how to surf, and surf surf surf surf surf. I was always kinda nervous about giving it a try and it’s always been something I’ve wanted to try and I’m gonna just keep saying try try try!
Anyways, so I took a lesson and it turned out that it was the day that the waves were ginormous and the guy that was teaching me how was like, “You picked the wrong day to learn how to surf.” And I was like, OK, well, this is the last day that we were here, so it was cool and I had fun regardless of whether the waves were big or not, and we did a two-hour lesson, and by the end, I had gotten up five times in a row, and by that time I was like, we should stop on a high note. So I can’t wait to try that for the next time. I’m not sure where, but there’s no big waves, or oceans in Chicago, so next time we travel, I’m gonna definitely try out surfing.
Last week I mentioned my bands, and so this week I wanted to show you what that was. So let’s take a walk behind me, and I’m gonna give you a little demo of what they are. So these are my strength bands. I’ve got four different colors and they’re all different sizes. I’ve got the green, which is really thick; the purple, which is a little bit thinner; the black, which comes next, is a little thinner than the purple; and the red that’s super thin.
So the way that you use these is for assisted pull-ups, or that’s the way, at least, that I use them. I, unfortunately can’t do a full pull-up on my own without the bands, so I got them to start working my way to be able to do a full pull-up on my own. So I started with the green band, and I – once I could do ten pretty smoothly, I moved up to the purple, and that’s where I currently am, and I’m working on – using the purple band I can do five pull-ups right now, and I do five pull-ups every time I walk past the gym, so I am trying to regularly do that.
The way that you use them is, you take the band, and put it over the bar, and then pull it through, and tighten it up, and if you’re tall enough to reach the bar, it’s probably easier for you, but I can’t, so I’m steppin’ on our little bench first and I’m gonna fix this up and tighten it up, and once you’ve got your little loop, you’re ready to go. All you gotta do is put your foot in the band, put your hands on the bar, and start doing pull-ups. (Laughs) This is not the first take.
So that’s how you do pull-ups with your strength bands, and I got mine from Fringe Sport, which is based out of Austin, so it’s a great local company, and that’s the strength bands!
When we came home from LA, the first thing I did was do a dexa scan, so if you don’t know what that is, it is a body fat measurement and it’s more than just, you know those little tweezer things that they put around your arms. It’s super accurate compared to those things. So I went to Dexa Fit in Chicago and I worked with a girl named Paige and she laid me down on this, like, solid piece of plastic and then this thing went over my body, and you had to lie real still, and then it gives you your results in six minutes and you know your lean body mass and your body fat and your bone mass and so it was really cool.
And I also had two other tests done when I was at Dexa Fit. I had my VO2 max scan, which is, you put this thing on your nose and your mouth, and I mentioned to Jeff that I felt like Bane from Batman because you’re talking into this thing and it sounds, like, really muted and, and whatever, and then you look like an elephant ’cause this thing is – tube is coming out of your mouth and it’s connected to the machine. So you go on the treadmill and then it measures your oxygen consumption and your calories burned, and so you then are given a target heart rate for when you’re working out. And so, when you wear a heart rate monitor, then you know when you have reached your fat-burning, your fat-burning exercise zones and your aerobic threshold and then your anaerobic threshold. If you don’t know what any of those things are, then I totally recommend you check it out. It is a dexa scan, and where I went in Chicago is called Dexa Fit.
The third test that I had done with them is an energy balance. It’s called the RMR. It measures your metallic – your metallic. It measures how much silver you have in your body. No, it measures your metabolic rate measurement. I said “measurement” twice. But that gives you the total number of calories that your body should be running on and it also gives you your metazzle – it also tell you your metabolism, whether it’s low, high, normal, or slow, fast (laughs). No! So it also tells you what your metabolism is, whether it’s low, or slow, or fast, or normal, and mine was in the range between slow and normal. So, yeah, that was interesting to find out that and to know more about my body. So I really enjoyed that test and I totally would recommend it if you are looking to find out more about you.
Let’s see, when we were in LA, we met with Melissa from rawpaleo.com and we’re gonna have an interview going up on Paleo Porn TV with all of the cool things that Melissa is doing in LA in regards to the raw Paleo diet, and so I look forward to sharing that stuff with you in a couple weeks maybe. It’s gonna take a little bit to go through all the data and – the data – the footage. Go through the footage and get all that wrapped up.
So, I’ve also got three new recipes on Paleo Porn. So, my goodness, I say “so” a lot. The three new recipes on Paleo Porn: the first one is Paleo Biscuits. Now, we don’t eat Paleo bread recipes all that often, but sometimes you are in the mood for a biscuit or in the mood for a tortilla or just, you know, something that’s not really meat or vegetables and has more of a texture. So Paleo Biscuits enter here, and these are some really good recipe – no – these are good biscuits that are made from – what is that flour called again? – Tapioca flour! They’re made out of tapioca flour. So there are no nuts. I don’t believe there’s any nuts in there and you should check that one out.
The second recipe on Paleo Porn this past week was Turkey Roll-Ups and this is the first recipe posted that’s not made by me. It’s made by Alison, who is our copywriter and researcher extraordinaire. She is writing all of the “Is It Paleos” for us on the Is It Paleo app on Paleo Porn and this recipe for Turkey Roll-Ups she brought to one of our Paleo Chicago meet-up events and we really enjoyed it, so I told her she had to share. And it’s perfect for little kids to bring to lunch for school or just for a snack, or if you want them in mass supply when you’re hungry and you need something that you don’t have to really put together and cook, this is perfect!
The third recipe I have on the site is Garlic Scape Ground Pork Mushroom Caps, and that is a mouthful, both in taste and in saying it. So I made this at the beginning of the summer when the garlic scapes were at the farmer’s market, along with the mushroom – portobello mushroom caps, the organic ones that were at the farmer’s market. It was my first – the first thing I grabbed was those two things and so I whipped together this recipe as soon as we came home and I was super excited to share it, except we’ve been traveling and doing all sorts of other things, so all recipes when I post them are typically on some sort of a couple-month delay, so sorry about that, but next time you see garlic scapes, you should definitely pick some up and whip up this recipe. Or, if you don’t have any garlic scapes, you can always replace them with either fresh garlic, or you can use green onions or scallions, or something like that, along the garlic/onion line.
So those are the three new recipes and the last thing I want to talk to you about – one of my – the last thing I wanna (laughs). Shhh! The last thing I want to talk to you about is one of the Paleo Porn recipes was featured in Healthy Recipes Magazine, and that is a free iPad app magazine that’s Paleo and healthy, as it’s called, so go ahead and download that – the app, so that you can check out that recipe.
And there’s so much else that’s going on, but I already am assuming this is a really long episode, and I’m sorry about that, but I hope you got something good out of it, and if you did, be sure to give us a thumbs up on YouTube and feel free to get ahold of us on Instagram or Google+ or Facebook or Twitter or email. Make sure you’re subscribed and, or no, this is for subscribers. I hope you enjoyed it and I hope to see you next week. Bye!
(Laughs) OK, cut.
